About Fauquier DFES

Fauquier County Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES), is the career component of the Fauquier County Fire and Rescue Services. Fauquier County Fire and Rescue is made up of 13 independently owned and operated volunteer Fire and Rescue Companies. Together they form the Fauquier County Fire and Rescue Association, which is responsible to promulgate Operational Policies and Guidelines, as well as distribution of funding to the volunteer companies. Fauquier DFES staffs volunteer stations and operates volunteer owned equipment in conjunction with volunteer members.

 

Fauquier County DFES has three Divisions that work together to provide operational staffing, training and fire prevention. 

 

The Administration consists of the DFES Chief Philip Myer,  Assistant Chief Darren Stevens and 3 Administration Support Specialists. This office supports Emergency Management, Operations, Prevention, Volunteer Fire Rescue Association, and County Government needs. This office also manages a $4.3 million budget where $2.7 million funds the VFRA and $1.6 million funds the DFES.  Christa Brown is the DFES Executive Assistant handling payroll and insurance for volunteer and career staff. Lynne Clegg is the Office Associate who handles Budget and Procurement.  Sara Makely is the Fire and Rescue Support Specialist who handles the records management system and Fire Marshal division support.

 

DFES Operations is the largest Division consisting of 25 full-time uniformed personnel and 7 part-time employees.  The Operations Division provides uniformed staffing for the purpose of answering emergency calls for service.  Each staff member is cross-trained as a Firefighter/EMT and 18 staff members are also advanced life support providers.  DFES Provides staffing for 6 Fauquier Fire Rescue Stations from 6 am to 6 pm on weekdays.  Supervision is provided through 3 Battalion Captains operating an ALS Equipped Response Vehicle.

 

The Training and Logistics Division is supervised by Deputy Chief Kurt Kight and employs 1 EMT Instructor.  The Training Division provides Fire and Rescue Training through the Fire Academy (Firefighter I/II), the VA EMT Program, and several specialty courses throughout the year.  The Fire Science and EMT Courses are also offered at Liberty and Fauquier High Schools, enabling school students over 16 the opportunity to attend during the day through the vocational department of Fauquier County Schools.  The Training Division is assisted by a cadre of Fire and EMS Educators. 

 

The Fire Marshal’s Office operates to promote fire safety/prevention through education and inspection procedures.  The Fire Marshals Office is also responsible for the investigation as to the cause and origin of fires and explosions that occur in Fauquier County.  DFES has 2 full time staff members and 4 part-time employees that are certified as Inspectors and Investigators with full law enforcement powers.  Additionally, DFES has 2 full-time staff members certified as inspectors and employs a part-time staffer, J. D. Mitchell, for plans reviews.  Currently there are no full-time positions dedicated to the Fire Marshal’s Office.
