Application Review The first stage of the process is application review. Each applicant is reviewed for the prerequisite skills and certifications for the position they applied for. If you received this package you successfully completed step 1.
To continue in the process, candidates must pass each section to proceed further. Additionally, you must complete the Initial Screening Guide which will be collected prior to the written exam. The following attachments will assist you in the process:

Written Exam There are two versions of the written exam (ALS/BLS) the version will depend on your EMS Certification level. Both written tests have a time limit of 1.5 hours and have a minimum score of 65. Each test has 100 questions from the following subject areas:
Firefighter/Paramedic: Questions from FFI/II , Haz-Mat Awareness, and EMT/Paramedic Course Materials. Firefighter/EMT: Questions from FFI/II, Haz-Mat Awareness, Driver-Pump Operator and VA EMT-B. Additionally, BLS Providers may be required to complete a written exam as part of the ALS course prerequisite process.
Physical Ability Course: The physical ability test consists of seven separate events. This test is a sequence of events that require you to progress along a predetermined path from event to event in a continuous manner. The course has a time limit of 10:00 Minutes (see attached description for more information)
Ladder Climb The applicant must climb to the top rung a 110 foot aerial tower/ladder at a 70 degree climbing angle. The applicant must wear heeled boots (Provided by applicant) helmet and work gloves.
Stretcher Lift The applicant, with a provided partner, must fully raise an EMS Stretcher from its lowest position and then load the stretcher in an ambulance. The coat will contain a 165 lb. Training mannequin.
Personal History Questionnaire During the Chief’s Interview applicants may be given the Personal History Questionnaire. This document is used during the background investigation and polygraph exam. Information provided is confidential and used for this purpose only.
Polygraph Examination A Polygraph exam will be scheduled by the department’s recruitment officer. The applicant will be provided with time, date and location. Be punctual and dress in business casual attire.
Physical Exam A medical/physical exam will be scheduled by the department’s recruitment officer. The applicant will be provided with time, date and location. Be punctual and dress in business casual attire. A physical packet with specific instructions will be provided prior to the appointment.
Chief’s Interview Successful applicants will then be scheduled for an interview with the Chief of the Department. This interview may be replaced by an interview panel depending on the number of available applicants or positions. Be punctual and dress in business attire.
